A humorous look at one person's efforts to 'get with the programme' and lose those excess pounds. What are the stumbling blocks? Where do I acquire that elusive extra will-power? Why is my attitude to food my biggest weakness? Are there psychological undertones to my lifelong struggle. . .or am I just plain greedy? Losing weight and keeping it off is only marginally less stressful than divorce and moving house! Laugh along to an issue we can all relate to.

This book was what it promised. A funny, witty look at years of yoyo dieting. It obviously caught me in the sample and also due to my mum being a chronic yoyo dieter from before I was born and still to this day.. *sigh*. So for me personally I found it a hilarious insider's point of view of the craziness that is extreme dieting. Every golden promise of weight loss appears to have been seized and explored in this book and the 'Bridget Jones style' writing is quirky and enjoyable.
The reason it got three stars is due to the formatting. Now I can quite happily pass over the odd typo/format issue but this book has a constant issue.. It is fixable and I hope the author considers doing so because it is very distracting (and happens SO often). What has happened is she's used the block style paragraphs, which is fine. But instead of allowing the text to 'continue' around the page she's hit enter. Which means you have half a sentence that then continues at the beginning of the next paragraph (or occasionally floats between paragraphs all on its lonesome). For a $4.99 priced book I don't think it's unreasonable to say I feel more time was needed here.
But otherwise a funny chatty read that comes across on the borderline of fiction/non-fiction. It probably would be a good read for those attempting the.. ahh.. not so sensible dieting practises? *grin*

The Fat Bag Stuck Between A Rock Cake A Hard Plaice Pearl Barley 9781446640876 Books Reviews

I just read the web blog about this book and found it worthy of purchase. I love the writing style and definitely believe this book is a great one to have when you take life and fat too seriously. Not to say it is not healthier to be thinner, I just felt so good reading about the frustration in a human to human way and in plain English. I like that the author doesn't give you a list of how too's. I'm not one who sticks with lists of things to do for very long when it comes to eating. I'll be back with a full review.

My full review I just finished Pearl Barley's "Big Fat Bag" this morning with my coffee on this beautiful summer day here in New England, USA. As I read it I could almost hear her British accent and read through it as if I were hearing her speak to me personally. Ms Barley's riveting honesty was not only inspiring; it was hilarious. Things I never dared think about my up and down weight were written in a way that made it all seem okay to say. I live this book as many of us over 50 women will admit. I doubt I'll ever take weight so seriously again. And yet, the painful comedy offers some good sense. First of all, it clearly defines addiction. The only difference between food addiction and any other addiction is, the monkey on our back is fatter. The horrendous undertaking to gain sobriety is no less difficult. But the book itself is a must have for those who feel alone in their perilous journey to thin. This book will not only make you laugh till you cry, it will change your emotions about what is and isn't beautiful. It will also speak to the fact that vanity is (as the bible tells it) "wind."
As I read the first half I had a huge urge to eat greasy fried foods, potato chips, and well, all the while my mouth was watering, (along with my eyes from laughter) I knew Pearl Barley was going to take me away from food. And she did. No diet book has ever done that for me.

It obviously caught me in the sample and also due to my mum being a chronic yoyo dieter from before I was born and still to this day.. *sigh*.
