The employee engagement literature suggests that attempts to address employee engagement up to now have met with little significant success. Despite the efforts, according to Gallup’s employee engagement surveys, the level of employee engagement has held steady at approximately 30%.

In this book, Dr. Joy makes the argument that little has changed in employee engagement because efforts to date have failed to target the root cause of the problem – the emotional state of employees. The book is based on the premise that employees can learn how to feel better on purpose and therefore be in a position to better tap into their own personal intrinsic motivation and make better use of skill based empowerment techniques.

In the Introduction, Dr. Joy states the book’s purpose is to “help managers understand how to improve employee engagement.” Each chapter of the book specifically addresses an area researchers have identified as being important to employee engagement. The chapters include such important areas as:
• Perception
• Cognitive Processes
• Resilience
• Psychological Flexibility
• Happiness

As a student of employee engagement, this is the first book I have read devoted exclusively to linking employee emotional state to employee engagement. I believe this book makes a significant contribution to the literature on employee engagement.

The book reflects a combination of the published research literature, exercises, self-help tests, an extensive bibliography and, of course, Dr. Joy’s own ideas, perspectives and experiences as well. Despite the book’s containing a heavy dose of the research science, I found the book to be engaging and easy to read.

This book certainly achieved its stated purpose and has greatly contributed to my knowledge of and thinking about employee engagement. I am sure it will do the same for you. If you have any interest in the subject of employee engagement, this book should be on your “Must Read” list.

This book is an excellent examination of a critical factor in the success of any business or organization. As any knowledgeable business owner/leader knows, the commitment of employees/workers is a critical factor in customer satisfaction which in turn is the primary driver of market share.

The book can be somewhat technical in some sections, and is clearly written for the human resource professional. However, I believe it is worthwhile for anyone who is interested in motivating a workforce.
